2018 Il Chiosso Fara, Fara DOC, Piedmont, Italy
Elegant, earthy, and quietly powerful, the 2018 Il Chiosso Fara is a compelling expression of Alto Piemonte's historic terroir. Opening with aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, and forest floor, it unfolds into a savory palate layered with wild strawberry, leather, and crushed herbs. Fine, firm tannins and bright acidity frame the wine, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish. This is Nebbiolo with nuance—refined yet rustic, and distinctly alpine in character.

ABOUT THE WINE
Fara is one of Alto Piemonte’s smallest and oldest DOCs, nestled between the Sesia and Cervo rivers, and known for producing structured, age-worthy reds from Nebbiolo and local blending grapes. Il Chiosso’s 2018 Fara blends 70% Nebbiolo with Vespolina and a touch of Uva Rara, harvested from hillside vineyards with volcanic and alluvial soils. The grapes were vinified traditionally, with extended maceration and aging in large Slavonian oak casks for 24 months, followed by additional time in bottle before release. The result is a wine of lifted aromatics and earthy depth—delicate red fruits, savory herbs, dried flowers, and iron-tinged minerality. Medium-bodied with lively acidity, it pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, braised pork, or aged toma cheese, and will age gracefully for 10–15 years.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Il Chiosso is a boutique winery based in Gattinara, dedicated to reviving the heritage of Alto Piemonte’s noble reds. Founded in the early 2000s by a group of local growers with deep ties to the land, the estate focuses on small-lot, terroir-driven wines made from native varieties. The name “Chiosso” refers to the traditional stone walls that enclose vineyard plots—a nod to both history and place. Farming is sustainable, with an emphasis on low yields and minimal intervention. In the cellar, the approach is restrained and traditional: long fermentations, neutral oak, and extended aging. Their Fara bottling showcases the quiet power and elegance of this overlooked appellation—an authentic voice from a region rediscovering its greatness.
