ABOUT THIS WINE
The 2019 Roagna Barolo “Rocche di Castiglione” is a singular expression of Nebbiolo from a 0.49-hectare parcel in the esteemed Rocche di Castiglione cru of Castiglione Falletto, a steep, south-facing site prized for its limestone-rich soils and refined ripening.
Roagna’s approach here reflects their deep commitment to traditional, terroir-driven winemaking: hand-harvested fruit fermented with indigenous yeasts (often with a pied de cuve) in large wooden vats, extended maceration under a submerged cap, and long aging in large neutral oak casks to preserve purity and site character
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Roagna is one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists, with a winemaking lineage dating back to the 19th century and a reputation for producing some of the region’s most soulful, long-lived expressions of Nebbiolo. Based in Barbaresco, with additional holdings in Barolo, the family-run estate is led by Luca Roagna, who upholds a rigorous commitment to natural viticulture and extended maceration techniques that capture both the structure and nuance of his crus.
The Roagna vineyards are all managed organically, with an emphasis on deep root systems, biodiversity, and low yields. In the cellar, nothing is rushed—fermentations are slow and natural, extractions gentle, and aging is done exclusively in large neutral oak to avoid masking the wine’s origin.
Roagna wines are benchmarks of purity, ageability, and site fidelity—crafted with a rare patience and restraint that puts them among the finest traditional producers not just in Barbaresco, but in all of Italy.
