2017 Vasse Felix "Tom Cullity", Margaret River, Australia
A wine of depth, precision, and pedigree, the 2017 Tom Cullity is Vasse Felix’s flagship red—an elegant and age-worthy blend that captures the essence of Margaret River’s founding Cabernet vines. Aromas of blackcurrant, bay leaf, dried sage, and warm cedar unfold with air, leading to a poised palate of dark plum, cassis, graphite, and fine-grained tannins. Lifted acidity and gentle grip guide a long, mineral-laced finish that speaks of maritime breezes and ironstone soils.

ABOUT THIS WINE
The Tom Cullity is named in honor of Vasse Felix’s founder, who planted the region’s first vines in 1967. The 2017 vintage, a cooler and longer growing season, allowed for slow, even ripening—ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The blend is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon (around 78%), supported by Malbec and Petit Verdot, sourced exclusively from the estate’s historic Home Block and other mature parcels in the Wilyabrup sub-region. These old, dry-grown vines on gravelly loam soils yield fruit of remarkable concentration and structure.
After meticulous hand harvesting and fermentation with native yeasts, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barriques (50% new), which lend subtle spice and polish without overwhelming the fruit. The 2017 Tom Cullity is defined by its fine structure, restrained power, and seamless integration of acidity and tannin.
Expect aromas of crushed blackberries, violets, olive tapenade, and forest floor, alongside a palate that’s both compact and layered. It pairs beautifully with herb-crusted lamb, grilled venison, or eggplant dishes with smoky spice. While already complex, it will continue to develop for two decades or more.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Vasse Felix is the founding estate of the Margaret River wine region and a pillar of Australian fine wine. Established in 1967 by Dr. Tom Cullity, the winery was the first to recognize the region’s potential for Bordeaux varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, under the leadership of Chief Winemaker Virginia Willcock, Vasse Felix is celebrated for its refined, site-driven wines that marry Australian ripeness with old-world elegance.
Farming across the estate’s vineyards is focused on sustainable, minimal-intervention practices, with an emphasis on vine health, biodiversity, and soil vitality. The team applies a highly selective approach to harvesting and winemaking, ensuring purity of expression and longevity in every bottle.
The Tom Cullity represents the pinnacle of Vasse Felix’s red wine program—a tribute not only to the man who started it all but also to the unique terroir of Wilyabrup. It is consistently among Australia’s most collectible and cellar-worthy Cabernet-based wines.
