Lyle and Eric were fortunate to obtain contracts with two of the top vineyards for Syrah and Grenache in Santa Barbara County, Syrah from the Bien Nacido Vineyard's “Z-block,” and Grenache from the biodynamic, wind-swept, John Sebastiano Vineyard. In 2019 they harvested the Syrah on October 8th, and the Grenache on October 14th, a lesson in balance between juiciness and freshness with a finished alcohol of just 12.6%.
Fermenting each cépage separately by vinication parcelaire in 2019, they allowed an extended aging in neutral French oak barriques and then after sixteen months found the sum of Syrah and Grenache being blended together more exciting than either of the parts were by themselves. Bottled at the end of March without any fining or filtration, the brothers have named this Santa Ynez Red blend, “COMME VOUS VOULEZ,” having bottled it “as they liked” blended together, rather than separately bottled as mono-varietal cuvées as before.
The punchiness of the whole-cluster Syrah was inspired by Eric and Lyle’s favorite producers in the Northern Rhône, and the aromatics of earlier-harvested Grenache transport them to their favorite estates in the Southern Rhône. Blended together in equal parts, the best attributes of these top vineyard sites in the region offer a red that epitomizes everything there is to love about the Central Coast.
